Most of these archeological layers were at least 3 sqm. The interesting part is the fact that the swaths were made from rushes, grasses, and sedges of plants grown alongside Tongaat River. Modern humans also use leaves that contain several chemical compounds that kill insects like mosquitoes and pests.

Approximately 20,000 to 10,000 BCE during the Neolithic period (New Stone Age), humans introduced pioneering innovations in bedding. These beds had piles of grass, leaves, possibly straws, and animal skins over them. The beds are also raised off the ground to avoid pests, dirt, and drafts.

3600 BC: Persian Water Beds

Humans crafted the first water bed in Persia. These beds are made from goatskins and cleverly filled with water. The water was meant to absorb body heat and keep people warm throughout the night.  

3400 BC: Egyptian Palm Bough Beds

Pharaohs in Egypt created a bed that was raised from the ground. Tutankhamun, the Pharaoh at that time, slept on an elevated bed covered with a gold sheet. Meanwhile, his subjects slept palm boughs, which were piled in the corners of their homes. These arrangements provided a natural and readily available source of comfort.

200 BC: Ancient Roman Mattresses

By 200 BC, the concept of mattresses began to take shape in Rome. These early mattresses consisted of bags made from cloth, typically filled with reeds, hay, or wool. The wealthy, in particular, sought luxurious comfort and used feather stuffing in their mattresses, foreshadowing the disparities in bedding comfort that would persist throughout history.
